As a foreigner living in Ukraine for many years, I have met a lot of Ukrainian and Russian women and have had the opportunity to observe their attitudes toward money. In this particular area I have observed that there is very little middle ground with Ukrainian women. Most of the ladies are at one end of the spectrum or the other.

First, there are the Ukrainian ladies who if, for example, you take them to a restaurant or cafe insist on ordering either nothing or perhaps just a glass of juice or a cup of tea. Some others have suggested to me this is why Ukrainian women are for the most part, quite slim and shapely. I don't believe that is why they are only ordering a cup of tea. If these ladies do order something additional they are careful to watch what you order and order the same or something of lesser cost.

Whether it be in the restaurant, in a shop, or ordering a service such as a taxi, these same Ukrainian ladies will usually be warning you if you are about to pay too much (in her opinion) for food or for a product in the store or for a taxi cab. And when it is time for her to go home (unless it is the middle of the night), if you try to order her a taxi she refuses and insists that she can get home by public transit.

Second, there is the other extreme. If you go to a restaurant these Ukrainian ladies will order the most expensive item on the menu (I think even if they don't really like it, they order it just because it is the most expensive). In many cases they will unexpectedly invite one (or more) of their lady friends along too. They are not the type of Ukrainian women who will warn you if they think you are overpaying for something. And these Ukrainian women are not going to be happy if you do not order them a taxi to go home, even if they just live around the corner. I am not saying these ladies are bad people (but you should be on your toes to observe if she is more interested in you or in what you can spend on her) but it seems to me that status is very important to them. And some of them believe that the more you spend on them the more it means that you care about them.

In almost all cases the Ukrainian women do expect that the man is the provider and should pay for her. The difference in the two extremes is the extent to which they feel the man should pay or perhaps to which they feel entitled. Now, as everything in the world, there are Ukrainian women in the middle of these two ends of the spectrum but not so many. I have even come across Ukrainian women who insist on paying for themselves, but that is quite rare. And even rarer, but it does happen, is having a Ukrainian woman pay for you!

One final note, unlike many other character traits, whether a Ukrainian woman is more towards one end of the spectrum or the other does not seem to depend on her age. Specifically, it does not seem to depend on whether she grew up in the USSR or post-USSR environment.

In any case, coming to Ukraine and meeting Ukrainian women is a great experience. You may even meet your future wife, I did.
